This came as quite a surprise. Earlier today I had to photograph “tacho rings” – Silver metal rings which border your dials in your vehicle. Normally I shoot on a plain white background but with chrome & silver, especially with smaller itesm, you tend to loose some of the detail with the white reflecting.

I needed a black background. Luck was on my side today, we had some tile samples and one of them was a polished black porcelain. Yes floor and wall tiles! – Grabbed one, gave it a quick clean and placed my rings on. Results are fantastic.

Looking at the large range of tiles available, textures & backgrounds get a whole new angle. From slate to polished to earth to mosaics.
