Road Trip gone wrong.
6 Jun
Well not entirely, very lucky to be here typing this post and laughing about the copper who insisted on buying the radio we had in the car!
Where: N3 Highway toward Durban, 35km from Harrismith
When: Friday 1st June 2007, 4:45pm, a few minutes after I said “looks like we’ll be in Harrismith by 5pm”
About: Rear left tyre got a major blowout as per the pics. Car drifted toward the oncoming lane, somehow I managed to counter steer and bring her back into our lane to perform 2 or 3 360degree turns and calmly rest on the embankment alongside the road.
As if that was not enough, the long smooth grass had the car slide down to level ground. I’m pretty sure I didnt hit anything, my money is on a tyre flaw. Poor kiddies in the back seat had seven shades of white painted on their mugs! Hey at least they have a ‘cool story to tell at school’
Not a scratch on the vehicle, HUGE thank you to the boys n girls who stopped to help, called friends and family to try to get a new 18″ tyre, which on a friday evening is no easy task. In the end we chanced it on the spare “marie biscuit” wheel to durban at a steady 80km/h.
Some pics below:
